Biography
Cesar Estrany was born in Tortosa, Spain, in 1948. Graduate in Literature at the University of Barcelona, Cesar Estrany worked as teacher of Theory of Art at the Barcelona Art School. Also in Barcelona and for seven years Cesar Estrany was the assistant manager of the San Jorge University College.
Cesar Estrany started to paint at an early age profoundly influenced by his family's strong artistic antecedents. Since 1967 he has featured in more than 100 solo exhibitions both in Spain in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza as well as overseas in Munich, Stuttgart, Buenos Aires, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah...
Together with well-known Spanish writers, Cesar Estrany, as illustrator, has published eight books.Along with Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain and H.H. Princess Diana of France, Duchess of Württemberg, Cesar Estrany illustrated in 1991 the book Les enfants et la vie,a sensational collection of charcoal, watercolour and pastel portraits and paintigs that expresses childhood, its vulnerability, curiosity and innocence.
Since Cesar Estrany first visited the United Arab Emirates, he soon felt the necessity to dive into this alluring country's history and culture. Cesar Estrany became fascinated with this part of the world and made subsequent trips gathering material for his paintins. Following extensive life periods in the middle east, Cesar Estrany began painting orientalist scenes.
His work has been depicted in three major exhibitions in the United Arab Emirates, two in Abu Dhabi, in the Main Hall of the Cultural Foundation and a thrid one at the Sharjah Fine Arts Museum, exhibition inaugurated by H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi. Cesar Estrany possess the ability to capture qualities of light and heat peculiar to the Arabian world and it is with both his orientalist paintings and portraits of the ruling family members that his reputation has been firmly established and for which he is best known in the Arabian Peninsula.
Back in Spain, Cesar Estrany is nowadays considered one of the most relevant genre painters. From an early stage in his career he had a love for recreating traditional life in western cities. His paintings of Tortosa, Amposta, Tarragona, Barcelona, Valencia or Ibiza, to mention just a few, depict everyday peasant life. His paintings are consistent in their quality and composition, fine in detail and rich in colour.
As a result of long periods of time spent in Emirates, Cesar Estrany discovers Orientalism. In Cesar Estrany's orientalist paintings both the recent past of the Arabian Gulf and the splendour of Al Andalus are thoroughly reflected.
While in Emirates, the painter was invited to teach in a practical course on pastel technique. This course designed for both local and international artists living in Abu Dhabi took place at the Cultural Foundation's Art Work Shop and lasted for several weeks.
In February 2011, Cesar Estrany depicted his work in Valencia, in an exhibition sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. His last exhibition, in September 2012, has been monographically devoted to the image of “La Mare de Déu de la Cinta” in his birthplace, Tortosa.
Nowadays Cesar Estrany lives in Barcelona where he is preparing a new series of orientalist paintings.
